1st I look up craigs list for someone renting rooms, sharing or temporary sublets ( In DC many have made a full time business of renting their spare bedroom in city.. Have to book well in advance.. but $50 night beats a $100 night for clean pleasant space with kitchen and comforts of own apt etc ).

If I can find nothing then I start to contact people who seem friendly enough.. in renting a room via like a roommate situation and ask if I can rent by night till they find someone or If only for a few days for that period… Usually they are game.. if not go to next ad !

What I am really enjoying is staying in the Hostels’ around the country as have plenty of privacy to work all day on computer etc but then at night and meal time have other’s around you.. which are very interesting people from all over the world.. Free breakfast and kitchen to keep your own food for other meals and much planned group outings and pizza parties to movie night etc… The hostels are very clean and well run in this organization…Hostelling International at www.hihostels.com The one at Fisherman Wharf in San Francisco is Awesome..

When driving there are discount books for hotels along the road.. that has turned into a big business and you get deals..that are also available for lodging in cities in the area…many have weekly rates etc…

I also have had good luck with name your own price website..www.priceline.com when staying in a hotel is required for privacy etc..

If I have time before… I will post my own ad on craigs list and or at a college in the area website for housing… Universities is another place like craigs list one can look for temporary housing .. Even going to Universities school physical bulletin board and reading ads or posting one of your own of what looking for…

Of course for me the ultimate nomad, my goal is to have one those beautiful hightech roadtrek van’s to live in when I have to be somewhere.. I love campsites… and being outside when I can.. but you also can park it in a parking lot when need be or side street without drawing attention and have all the comforts of home and or office ~

drew olanoff dot com.: I'm moving to India.

drew olanoff dot com.: I'm moving to India.:
drew:

Mid-October I’m going to do something awesome, I’m going to move to India for 3 months.

I’m taking everything I have, the technology, the social, all of it…and we’re going to hit New Delhi, Mumbai, and beyond.

I'm fortunate enough to have a portable job - I can work anywhere I can get a reliable internet connection. I do need to work eight hours a day though.

I've done a couple of 'working vacations' so far, staying in hotels, working during the day, and exploring new places in the evenings and weekends. It's not trivial (though far from impossible) to find affordable hotels with good internet access. Hotels also aren't ideal places to work during the day, and storing food, cooking, etc can be a challenge.

Do you have any advice for finding places to stay in areas where I don't know anyone?

I’m working on a good list for this, but I think renting apartments is bar far the best value if you are going to be in a city for more than a few days, plus they give you a more neighborhood experience to a city. There are a bunch of online communities (compiling lists now) for these kinds of things, from couch surfing to home swapping and everything in between. More on this one soon for sure.

Possessions

You never own posessions, as posessions own you.

Is there a quick fix (bank robbing) or is it just the barrier to entry....?

There are lots of options, but the thing most common seems to be to have a job that is location independent - maybe your own company or something you can telecommute to - then you just do the same thing as always.
